I’m a 1st year CS Ph.D. student advised by Eric Paulos. I’m interested in how people make art with computers and how the study (and practice) of art can enrich technical and social research. I did my undergrad at Stanford where I focused on Graphics, but found my way to HCI by the end. My interests usually collect around art, technology, aesthetics, queer theory, philosophy of science, of technology, and of practical action.

Right now I’m working on version control systems for artists who work with code and thinking about the role of philosophy in empirical research. I’m a big fan of John Dewey.

An object which excites me right now is a book. Beyond the information contained on the pages, the object itself is interesting for a few reasons: 1. It takes up space—its position in my bookshelf, in my backpack, on my nightstand, or in a box in the corner is richly indicative of the situations and uses it is involved in. Even without opening it, pulling it from the bookshelf to sit on the desk signals its symbolic involvement in a thought 2. It is a physical record — notes in the margins from years ago (sometimes from other people as well) create a rich life to the paper text. In the margins of my books are lecture notes, paper outlines, book recommendations, phone numbers, and passionate reactions—all of which enliven the text; The paper book enters the texture and rhythm of my life in a way PDFs never do.
